TN Network Update — 10/08/2026
FROM GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT DOUG CLAY:
I am writing to make you aware of an opportunity that could be a valuable resource for pastors and churches throughout your network: the Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program, administered by Christian Theological Seminary.
The program provides competitive grants of up to $60,000 to Christian congregations to make it possible for pastors to take a period of renewal leave. The purpose of the program is designed to strengthen congregations by giving pastors an opportunity to step away from the demands of daily ministry for renewal and reflection.
The next program year is anticipated to open in November 2026, when the new Request for Proposals will be published. The typical timeline includes the program opening in early November, an informational webinar in mid-November and proposals due in mid-March.
While the requirements for the upcoming cycle will not be final until the new Request for Proposals is released, the current program provides a helpful picture of the opportunity. Eligible applicants include ordained pastors serving in congregational ministry, including those serving full time, part time or bi-vocationally. The program favors those with a Master of Divinity degree but is also open to ministers without a Master of Divinity degree when they are in good standing with their ordaining body and can demonstrate a strong record of congregational service and commitment to continuing education or professional development.
Under the 2026 guidelines, congregations could request as much as $60,000, with up to $20,000 available for congregational expenses, including pastoral coverage and activities that contribute to congregational renewal while the pastor is away. The remaining funds support the pastor's renewal experience.
The program encourages approximately 12 weeks of total renewal leave, taken as one extended period or divided into shorter periods of at least two weeks.
Because the application requires collaboration between the pastor and congregation, churches would benefit from learning about the program well before the proposal deadline.
Blessings,
--
